Current Builders Encourages High School Students to Pursue Careers in Building Construction by Initiating South Florida Mentoring Program
Pompano, FL - October 23, 2008 — Current Builders' CEO, Chip Reid, became heavily involved in the National ACE Mentoring Program in January 2007. ACE's mission is to enlighten high school students on career opportunities in architecture, construction and engineering, as well as construction trades, through mentoring. In return, the industry gets a much-needed boost of new talent.
Chip Reid became so involved in the ACE program that he formed a board of 26 members and volunteered to be the Chairman of the South Florida Board of Directors for the ACE Mentoring Program of South Florida. The South Florida ACE Board is responsible for implementing and championing formal ACE mentoring programs in six local high schools and facilitating each school to establish construction career academies. Counties include Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Martin counties.
"We recognize the challenge the construction field faces to find young and energetic leaders with an interest in building construction. Current Builders has always been committed to giving back to the construction industry to ensure its future vitality and it is my hope that the program provides insight to students and exposes them to the functional parts of the industry," states Chip Reid, CEO of Current Builders.
During the program, students are introduced to the various design professions and the role that each performs in planning, designing and constructing a project. Students also gain firsthand insight into the design industry by touring project offices and visiting active construction sites.
The mentors meet with students during the school year approximately 15 times. The students also meet with their school mentors weekly to develop their year-end final presentation - a Request for Proposal. The students build their projects from conception to design, including estimating and cost control. Throughout the year, students will be working on their year-end presentation and will be competing against each other and other schools for scholarship opportunities.
Current Builders has engaged industry professionals, such as college and university representatives, architects, Building and Information Modeling (BIM) professionals, LEED certified personnel, structural and civil engineers, and plumbing, HVAC and electrical contractors, as mentors for the students. Chip has also recruited several other leading industry general contractors to facilitate and manage the ACE Mentoring program in the Southeast region of Florida, including Turner Construction, James A Cummings, Roepnack Construction, Suffolk Construction and Pirtle Construction.
